The Seed Theatre is a vital nonprofit organization, community haven, and performing arts group in Chattanooga, Tennessee, dedicated to serving the LGBTQIA+ community, BIPOC individuals, disabled persons, and marginalized youth.

🎭 More Than a Stage: The Shift to Mutual Aid

Founded in 2019 as a community theater project, the organization quickly transformed into one of Chattanooga’s only designated LGBTQIA+ safe and sober spaces. Over time, its mission blossomed from staging safe artistic works into providing a comprehensive full-time mutual aid network.
The organization actively serves the city through several core outreach projects:
• Feed the City: Combating local food insecurity by managing 6 community fridges and pantries across Chattanooga, feeding roughly 45,000 people annually.
• Hygiene Pantry Project: Providing free, essential personal hygiene items with dignity from their central location.
• Pennywhistle Project: Offering vital emergency aid and resource routing to support queer and transgender individuals navigating severe mental health crises.
• Support & Youth Groups: Hosting social and therapeutic groups, including specialized circles like “Seedlings” designed for queer tweens and teens to build supportive community connections in the South.

🎪 Theatrical Footprint & Productions

While the main headquarters and community hub (known as the ROOTS space) is located at 650 McCallie Avenue, it operates primarily as an office, resource library, and workshop space rather than a traditional production auditorium.
Instead, the troupe maintains a theatrical partnership with Barking Legs Theater to stage its larger live performances. Their distinct programming footprint includes:
• The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Seed Theatre’s massive annual hallmark tradition, featuring a full-scale, Broadway-style shadowcast performing live alongside the classic cult film every October.
• Satirical & Youth Theater: Staging boundary-pushing regional plays (like Larissa FastHorse’s The Thanksgiving Play) alongside fully youth-centered summer theater productions (like Winnie the Pooh).
• Holiday Benefit Shows: Regular community performance gatherings such as Julie the Queer that Saved Christmas and winter drag brunches to fundraise for local mutual aid initiatives
