The Signal Mountain Playhouse (SMPH) is a beloved, volunteer-driven non-profit community theater that has been staging family-friendly entertainment under the open sky since 1972. Tucked into a wooded, natural hillside amphitheater next to the Signal Mountain Town Hall, it offers a distinct, “theatre in the woods” experience just a short drive up the mountain from Chattanooga.
🎠Performance Seasons & Venues
The playhouse splits its programming between two distinct seasonal traditions:
• The Summer Musical (July): This is the theater’s signature outdoor experience. Productions like The Wizard of Oz, The Music Man, and Oliver! are brought to life in the open-air amphitheater at 1104 James Blvd. Audiences sit on terraced stone hillsides, making lawn chairs and blankets an absolute necessity.
• The Winter/Fall Shows: To keep the performance art alive during cooler months, the playhouse shifts indoors to stage comedies or musical revues. These are typically hosted nearby at the Mountain Arts Community Center (MACC) or local churches.
🎫 Tickets & Logistics
If you are planning to attend an upcoming show, keep these local tips in mind:
• Pricing: Tickets are highly affordable, typically running $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
• On-Site Only: You cannot buy tickets online in advance. The box office opens on-site at 6:00 PM on show nights (with the curtain rising at 8:00 PM). Locals regularly arrive early right when the box office opens to claim their favorite hillside spots with their lawn chairs before grabbing dinner.
• Payment: The box office accepts cash, local checks, or Venmo processed on-site.
• Amenities: Concessions (like fresh popcorn, pizza, candy, and soft drinks) and accessible portable restrooms are available on the amphitheater grounds.
